I am not a drug addict, I am not a slacker, I am not a looser or a convicted felon. I don't commit crimes, I don't steal, or ride a bike. I have never been to jail, I have never gotten arrested, and I have never killed anyone. These are all cliches and assumptions people make about others with tattoos, but I LOVE tattoos and piercings. Yes, I am a normal person that loves body modifications. I think they are sexy, intriguing, and show personality of the person that wears them.
In late February I got my first body modification, a nose ring. In early June I got my first tattoo. Now I am addicted to the modifications that I can do. There are things that I wouldn't do but think are beautiful. There are things that I will do that will be permeant and I will have to live with it. I don't have a problem with that.
I know that several people have issues with tattoos; however, what society has forgotten is that a tattoo use to be a status symbol. For over 5000 years people have been modifying their bodies with tattoos and piercings. In several tribes it is a symbol of honor, family and pride. Some cultures used it as a from of therapeutic medicine.
It all started with the Egyptians and spread from there. Although there are accounts of earlier cultures tattooing the Egyptians really helped the art spread. The art spread and influenced many cultures and made its way to my ancestral line.
What happen to our society to condemn body modifications when at one point it was so widely accepted? Religion...that's what happen. Because the art of tattooing was being used by pagans to honor their diety the art of tattoo was considered wrong to the church.

I personally love and have always loved body modifications. I will admit I was afraid to get a tattoo because of the permanency of it. But we only live once and it is my body. If I can't live the way I want and modify my body how I want then what is the point of the freedoms I have? I am living now. I am becoming free.
